abstract = {Background: Mixed reality is an emerging technology allowing to "blend" virtual objects in the actual user's environment. A way to realize this is by using head-mounted displays. Many recent studies have suggested the possibility of using this technology to support the cognition of people with neurodegenerative disorders. However, most studies explored improvements in cognition rather than in independence and safety during the accomplishment of daily living activities. It is therefore crucial to document the possibility of using mixed reality to support the independence of older adults in their daily life.
Objective: This study is part of a larger user-centered design study of a cognitive orthosis using pure mixed reality to support independence of people living with neurodegenerative disorders (NDs). The objectives were to explore: (1) What are the main difficulties encountered by older adults with NDs in their daily life to ensure that the pure mixed reality meets their needs; (2) What are the most effective interventions with this population in order to determine what types of assistance should be given by the pure mixed reality technology; (3) How should the pure mixed reality technology provide assistance to promote safety and independence at home; and (4) What are the main facilitators and barriers for the use of this technology. Methods: We conducted a descriptive qualitative study with 5 focus groups with experts of the disease and its functional impacts (n = 29) to gather information. Qualitative data from the focus groups was analyzed through an inductive thematic analysis.
Results: The themes emerging from the analysis will provide clear guidelines to the development team prototyping a first version of a cognitive orthosis based on pure mixed reality.
Conclusions: The cognitive orthosis that will be developed in the light of this study will act as a proof of concept of the possibility of supporting people with neurodegenerative disorders using pure mixed reality.},

abstract = {The current Internet of Things (IoT) development involves ambient intelligence which ensures that IoT applications provide services that are sensitive, adaptive, autonomous, and personalized to the users' needs. A key issue of this adaptivity is context modelling and reasoning. Multiple proposals in the literature have tackled this problem according to various techniques and perspectives. This chapter provides a review of context modelling approaches, with a focus on services offered in Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) systems for persons in need of care. We present the characteristics of contextual information, services offered by AAL systems, as well as context and reasoning models that have been used to implement them. A discussion highlights the trends emerging from the scientific literature to select the most appropriate model to implement AAL systems according to the collected data and the services provided.},

Assistance to perform IADL can help people with AD (PwAD) to stay independent longer and live at home. Such assistance can be provided remotely from a caregiver to perform certain tasks using a shared visual representation, where, for instance, audio cues by phone are not sufficient. The keycube comprises 80 keys equally disposed on 5 faces. In this paper we investigate keycube text entry performances and the potential typing skill transfer from traditional keyboard. Using prototype implementations, we conducted a user study comparing different cubic layouts and included a baseline from traditional keyboards. Experiments show that users are able to attain about 19 words per minute within one hundred minutes of practice with a QWERTY-based cubic layout, more than twice the speed of an unknown-based cubic layout with similar error rate, and about 30% of their speed with a traditional keyboard.},

abstract = {This paper presents an embedded system that performs activity recognition in the city. Arduino Due boards with infrared, distance and sound sensors are used to collect data in the city and the activity, profile, and group size recognition performance of different machine learning algorithms (RF, SVM, MLP) are compared. The features were extracted based on fixed-size windows around the observations. We show that it is possible to achieve a high accuracy for binary activity recognition with simple features, and we discuss the optimization of different parameters such as the sensors collection frequency, and the storage buffer size. We highlight the challenges of activity recognition using anonymous sensors in the environment, its possible applications and advantages compared to classical smartphone and wearable based approaches, as well as the improvements that will be made in future versions of this system. This work is a first step towards real-time online activity recognition in smart cities, with the long-term goal of monitoring and offering extended assistance for semi-autonomous people.},
